The Hungarian Psychiatric Association (HPA) The Hungarian Psychiatric Association (HPA) was founded in 1980 and has been a registered association since 1989. It operates in accordance with its Statutes and Organizational and Operational Regulations.
The Association's Objectives
(Excerpt from the HPA Statutes):
- To promote the development of psychiatry and related sciences, mental health protection, and its interdisciplinary fields.
- To expand the scientific and ethical knowledge of its members.
- To engage in high-level scientific dissemination and participate in public health education.
- To unite and support the diverse theoretical and therapeutic approaches in Hungarian psychiatry, recognizing their coexistence as a value.
- To facilitate collaboration among professionals with different qualifications working in psychiatry.
- To introduce domestic and international advancements in psychiatry and related fields, promote their practical application, and disseminate Hungarian research results both nationally and internationally.
- To participate in and contribute to professional policy decisions related to psychiatry, as well as represent the professional interests of its members, organizational units, and psychiatric institutions.
- To support the professional development and career advancement of its members, with special attention to young professionals.
- To foster relationships among members, organizational units, and the Association as a whole.
- To strengthen, protect, and enhance the recognition, appreciation, and dignity of psychiatry, its related fields, and the professionals and organizations involved in these disciplines.
Activities of the Association:
To achieve its goals, the Association carries out the following activities:
- Organizes educational, training, and scientific events for its members.
- Supports its members' professional travel abroad, providing scientific, moral, and occasionally financial assistance, and invites foreign experts for exchanges and collaboration.
- Publishes books, study materials, and scientific journals.
- Maintains an official website.
- Announces competitions, awards prizes, and establishes scholarships, commemorative medals, and research grants.
- Takes a stand on professional, educational, training, scientific, organizational, financial, legal, and ethical issues related to psychiatry, either independently or upon request.
- Establishes relationships and collaborates with national and international professional organizations, supporting and coordinating the activities of its members and organizational units in this regard.
- Pays special attention to maintaining contact with Hungarian professionals living abroad.
- Strives for cooperation with health authorities, professional boards, national psychiatric institutions, as well as patient advocacy groups, civil and human rights organizations.
- Engages in active media communication.
- Maintains an up-to-date membership registry.
Structure of the HPA
The membership of the Hungarian Psychiatric Association fluctuates between 900 and 1100 members. In addition to psychiatrists and residents, we also have psychologists, mental health professionals, social workers, and other specialized professionals among our members.

Scientific Journal of the HPA – Psychiatria Hungarica
The journal is published four times a year and primarily targets the Hungarian professional audience. It features content in Hungarian, with occasional publications in English. The journal includes original research articles, short communications, review studies, case reports, forum topics, reports from Hungarian research groups, letters to the editor, conference reports, as well as scientific and literary book or film reviews and recommendations.
The journal is indexed in PubMed and is also available in the Portico and EBSCO databases.

Awards and Recognitions
The most important awards established by the Hungarian Psychiatric Association:

Oláh Gusztáv Memorial Medal – Awarded annually to one or two individuals who have made outstanding contributions in alignment with the Association's objectives (a lifetime achievement award).

Nyírő Gyula Award – Granted annually to the author or editor of the best handbook or monograph published domestically or internationally in the previous calendar year. Up to three recipients may be awarded.

Vikár György Award – Granted biennially (in even-numbered years) for the best case-study published in national professional journals.

Hollós István Award – Awarded biennially (in odd-numbered years) for the best publication in Psychiatria Hungarica.
Conferences and Annual Meetings
The Hungarian Psychiatric Association organizes an annual itinerant conference for the Hungarian scientific and professional community, which takes place at a different location each year.
Additionally, every four years, a congress is held in Budapest, during which the delegates elect the Leadership.
